Beechwood became a public park in the 1960s and many of its play facilities date from about that time. In 2008, the surface of the mini traffic area is breaking up after 40 years of service, and the protective fence is weak in places. The play facilities are still popular but swings and chutes are now considered to be high accident risks and ought to be replaced with other features.
Stirling Council does not have any one person or department in overall control of the city’s parks. Instead, Children’s Services regulates the play facilities, Active Stirling manages the football pitches and park maintenance is carried out by Environmental Services.
Aware that the park service is fragmented, a group of interested people formed Friends of King’s Park in 2004 to help co-ordinate and improve the city’s King’s Park and you may have seen some of their projects. Last year Torbrex Community Council agreed to create a similar group for Beechwood Park
This group, Friends of Beechwood Park (FoBP), is a sub-committee of Torbrex CC and meets monthly. Meeting are open and anyone wishing to attend is welcome.
Although FoBP has longer term aims, its immediate attention has been focussed on the proposed children’s play developments and it has worked with Children’s Services (who have the remit to commission the work) to have their proposals put on display for public comment. A report on the results of the consultation has been produced and formally adopted by Torbrex Community Council. To see a copy of the report, click on this link Beechwood Park Consultation Report .
If you would like to know more about the activities of the Friends of Beechwood Park, come along to one of our meetings, which will take place in Stirling High School at 7.30pm on Tuesday 14th July in teh Mayfield Centre, Wednesday 17th September and Thursday 12th November in Stirling High SChool.
